First I would find out where are the gaps in previous research, then design an experiment that answers those gaps and a good way to do it, test participants and analyse the results. For example at the moment I’m trying to find out why bilinguals feel less emotional in their second language. Nobody has done this yet. We are using an eye-tracker to do this (you can see one in my profile picture), and we measure pupil size when the participants are shown emotional words (your pupils expand when you are shown emotional words). Then we see which things in your language background (for example when you learnt it, or if you learnt your language home or at school) make you react more strongly to English words. Next I need to analyse my results!
