That is a very big question, and no one really knows for sure – but there are lots of ideas, like it’s our way of consolidating what we’ve experienced that day, or processing our emotions, or maybe that it’s just something that happens but for no particular reason…. it’s a really interesting area to research
One possible explanation is that your brain activity is different when you sleep to when you are awake (so your brain never really stops). In your sleep the brain activity patterns are uncontrolled and quite random, which might explain why dreams are so strange sometimes 🙂
