A Degree in Psychology and a PhD in Psychology
I have always worked at the University of Liverpool
Favourite thing to do in my job: My favourite thing is to give people alcohol and measure how their behaviour might change! People sometimes act drunk when you pretend to give them alcohol.
I am a 28 year old psychologist from Liverpool.
I am 28 years old. I live with my fiance (and her really irritating cat) in Everton, which is in Liverpool. Obviously I also support the team too!
When I am not being a scientist I have many things that stop me getting bored, these include sports, art, and travelling. I love Lego and probably spend too much money on it. I like going to gigs and festivals, and listen to a lot of music. If I am having a stressful day at work I listen to music from the Harry Potter films to calm me down!.
I am a lecturer in psychology (appetite and addiction)
I conduct research into behaviours that are harmful to health, particularly drug and alcohol use, and unhealthy eating behaviours. Some of the things I am particularly interested in is how individuals can lose control in certain situations and this might lead to drunkenness and eating bad foods (chocolate and crisp).
As well as my research I enjoy teaching. I teach on a variety of subjects including addiction and statistics.
My Typical Day
I don’t really have a typical day, it will involve a combination of writing, teaching, research and chatting to students.
A typical day might involve a morning of writing, maybe scientific papers or proposals for new experiments. I will schedule meetings in the afternoons when I am a bit more alert (I am NOT a morning person), these might be with students to discuss our study findings or professors to being new lines of research. Some days I will give lectures and these will vary widely from 12 students to over 200. More recently I have been getting out and doing more with the general public, which includes chatting on the radio / in magazines about my research or giving demonstrations.
What I'd do with the prize money
I would use the money to go to Green Man Festival and talk about the research we do there.
Green Man festival has a area called Einstein’s Garden where people go to learn more about science and technology. I would use the money to talk to the people at the festival about the research I do on alcohol consumption and food intake.
How would you describe yourself in 3 words?
Quiet, Happy, Tired (at the moment).
What's the best thing you've ever done in your career?
I have won an award for my research, which I am pretty proud of.
What or who inspired you to follow your career?
I enjoy the freedom of finding things out that interest me by conducting experiments
Were you ever in trouble at school?
I once got 6% in a music exam, despite trying my best. For the questions I didn’t know I wrote stupid answers. My exam was sent home to my parents.
If you weren't doing this job, what would you choose instead?
Probably still a student finding out what I would like to do.
Who is your favourite singer or band?
David Gray (I am NOT embarrassed by this)
What's your favourite food?
What is the most fun thing you've done?
Tough one, I cant really think…
If you had 3 wishes for yourself what would they be? - be honest!
To stay healthy. To carry on enjoying my work. A yacht
Tell us a joke.
Two fish swim into a concrete wall. The one turns to the other and says ‘Dam’
